About this play
The second layer most programs add once cutting is clean: pass and screen away instead of cutting. Why: the pin-down for the far wing gives a shooter a running catch at the top, and the screener's rule, go the opposite way from the cutter, means two players are open off one screen. The cutter reads his defender: trailing, curl to the rim; going under, come off straight for the shot; shooting the gap to the ball side, fade; top-locking, reject and back cut. Counter shown: the scouted defense shoots the gap, the defender sliding to the ball side of the screen to meet the cutter at the top, so the cutter fades behind the screen to the wing, the passer dribbles toward him to shorten the pass, and the catch on the fade beats a late closeout. Rule: the screener stops a step short of the defender, two or three feet, and stays planted, because a screen that keeps chasing is a moving screen; the cutter holds until the screen is set, then takes his man straight into the screener's chest. I wrote up the pin-down in the screens post on the site, Hooper University's Away breakdown shows the single screen away inside 5-out, and the screener's go-opposite rule is from Coach's Clipboard's open post offense; give them a look.
