About this play
The get: the ball handler passes to the trailing five at the top and sprints right back to take the handoff, so the five's body becomes a ball screen without anyone having to set one. Why I like it for a high school team: nothing new has to be taught, since the handler is reading a ball screen he never had to wait for, and the five is already moving before the defense can call a coverage. The reads, in the order the handler sees them: if his man chases him around the exchange, the handler keeps the ball on his far hip and attacks the paint while the five rolls in behind the chaser; if his man ducks under the five to meet him on the other side, the handler either shoots on the catch or lets the five pivot and set a second screen back the way they came; if his man sits on the chase and will not let him reach the five, the handler plants and back cuts to the rim. Counter shown: the scouted defense drops the big to the elbow and tags the roll from the strong corner, so the handler kicks to the corner shooter the tagger left and relocates to the wing, because a drop coverage can stop the drive or the roll but not the shooter who was abandoned to stop them. Rule: the handoff receiver runs through the exchange at full speed; a walked get is just a pass. Most of what I know about the get comes from Hooper University's write-up and Basketball Immersion's video on teaching it inside a conceptual offense; give them a look if you want the whole read tree.
