About this practice
The footwork session a Spanish club academy runs with its eleven and twelve year olds, built from games instead of lines. Stops and starts are the first thing the academy teaches, and it teaches them inside tasks where the player finds the answer: red-light stops, the X-zone game with its tags and spots, gate starts, the cone read one-on-one, the gather step from two balls, and planting the ball, which trains pivots and stops because the game demands them. The session is calm and drill-based, nobody yells, and it ends with a king of the court where only a basket after a balanced stop counts. Every task here came from the Valencian basketball federation's technical blog: Carles Yuste, Cristina García, Valentín García, and Pol Velázquez on stops, starts, and the gather step. Read them in Spanish if you can; the diagrams carry you if you cannot.
