The game plan
vs. Central High
Example report
Keys to the game
Make #3 a passer
Target: Under 15 shots for #3
Beat the press with the pass, not the dribble
Target: Under 10 turnovers
Finish every possession with a box-out
Target: Under 8 offensive rebounds
The opponent
A Horns team that plays fast after makes. #3 Andre Cole starts almost everything: a ball screen at the elbows, then he picks the defender he wants. They score in the first eight seconds off our misses and in the last eight off his isolations. Take away #3 and the paint, and make the other four beat us from outside.
Their sets
Horns Fist · “Fist” · Ran 14×
- How we guard it
- #3 takes the elbow screen and #44 rolls. #44's defender shows high and gets back; #3's defender goes over. The low help tags #44 on the roll, and the corner stays home on #24.
Horns Twist · “Twist” · Ran 6×
- How we guard it
- #3 fakes the first screen and comes back off the second. Talk early. #3's defender stays attached through both screens; nobody leaves a shooter to help.
Horns Zipper · “Zip” · Ran 4×
- How we guard it
- #24 zippers to the top for a catch. Top-lock him on the down screen and make him catch going away from the rim.
Their defense
Man-to-man · “Red” · Ran 38×
- How we attack it
- Their bigs hedge high on every ball screen. Get the ball out of the hedge to the screener popping to the elbow, then attack the rotation.
Three-quarter press · “Gold” · Ran 9×
- How we attack it
- A 2-2-1 after made free throws and timeouts. Inbound before it sets, break long and come back, and flash a guard to the middle. Pass it ahead; no dribbling into the corners.
Their strengths
#3 in the ball screen and in transition. #44 on the offensive glass. They make the extra pass to #24 when help comes.
Their weaknesses
#20 and #44 shoot under 55% at the line. They don't get back after their own misses. Their guards stop ball-watching on skip passes, so the second side is open.
