1 at the top against four-out with 5 on the left block. X1 on the ball, X2 and X3 in the gap, X4 on the help line, X5 behind 5. Why the gap defenders are the first helpers: they are a step from every drive before it starts.
1 passes to 2 on the wing. X2 closes out, X1 drops into the gap one pass away, X4 to the gap on the corner, X3 and X5 to help. Why X1 sits in the gap and not next to 1: 1 is one pass away now, and the gap is where the help for 2's drive comes from; the defense concedes the pass back to 1 to have it.
2 drives the middle. X2 slides, and X1 stunts from the gap: a hard step at the ball with his hands up, enough to make 2 pick it up, and no more. Why a stunt and not a full help: 1 is a shooter one pass away, and a full help would concede him the open catch; the stunt loans a step and takes it back.
2 picks up and kicks it to 1 at the top. X1 recovers: he is already turning as the pass leaves and closes out with a hand high. X2 drops into the gap. Why the recovery beats the pass: the kick-out is thrown from a dead ball, and the helper is one step from where he started.
1 reverses to 3 on the left wing while 2 relocates to the wing. X3 closes out, X1 drops into the gap, X5 shades to the high side of 5, X2 and X4 to help. Why the reversal gets nothing: the stunt-and-recover cost the offense a drive and gave it a pass back to the top.
3 drives the baseline. X3 rides him with no middle, and X5 leaves 5 to wall off the drive outside the block, hands straight up. Why X5 helps fully and X1 only stunted: the baseline drive is going to the rim, and a stunt does not stop a drive at the rim; the defense concedes 5 for a moment to keep the layup off the board.
3 picks up and throws it back out to 1. X5 recovers to 5 on the flight, X1 closes out, X3 drops into the gap. Why the pass went out and not to 5: 5 was open for one second, but the pass to him was a short one into a crowd, and the pass out was the safe one; the defense counted on that.
1 passes to 2 on the right wing while 3 relocates to the wing. X2 closes out, X1 to the gap, X4 to the gap on the corner. Why the defense is calm after two drives: both ended in a pick-up and a pass back out, which is the whole plan.
2 drives the baseline. X2 rides him, X4 stunts from the corner, and X5 rotates to the front of the rim from the help side. Why X4 only stunts: 4 is a corner shooter one pass away, so the full help comes from X5 at the rim and X4 loans a step, conceding 4 nothing.
2 picks up and kicks it to 4 in the corner. X4 recovers with a short closeout, hand high, no baseline; X5 recovers to 5, X2 drops into the gap. Contested, contained. Why three drives produced nothing: each met help before the rim, and each helper got back to his man before the next pass could become a shot.
