1 at the top against four-out with 5 on the left block. X5 plays behind 5 with a hand in the lane, the perimeter is in the gap and on the help line. Why 5 on the block is the rebounding problem: he is already inside, so X5's box-out has to be the first one.
1 passes to 2 on the right wing. X2 closes out, X1 to the gap, X4 to the gap on the corner, X3 to help, X5 shades. Why the defense concedes the catch: it will concede the contested shot, too, as long as it rebounds it.
2 passes to 4 in the corner. X4 closes out with no baseline, X2 drops to the gap. Why the corner is a fine place for the ball: the shot from there is long, and long shots miss long.
4 throws it back to 2. X2 closes out, X4 drops to the gap. Why the swing is the defense's friend: it costs the offense clock and gains it nothing inside.
2 swings it to 1 at the top. X1 closes out, the wings drop to the gap. Why the defense keeps conceding the swing: every catch is contested and nobody has been inside the lane.
1 reverses to 3 on the left wing with the clock low. X3 closes out with his hand high, X1 drops to the gap, X5 shades to the high side of 5. Why this is the shot the defense wants: a contested wing three late in the clock, with five defenders already in position to box out.
3 shoots over X3's hand. Shot. Why nobody watches it: the defense's job on the shot is the rebound, and a defender watching the flight is a defender losing his man.
Shot! Every defender finds his man and makes contact: X3 turns into 3, X5 seals 5 off the block with his backside, X1 hits 1 at the top, X2 and X4 turn into their men on the far side. Why contact before the ball: the ball comes down in a second and a half, and the player who has a body on somebody is the one who gets it.
The miss comes off long and X5, with 5 sealed behind him, goes and gets it. Rebound, possession over. Why this was the right trade: the defense conceded a contested three and nothing else, and then made sure the three was the offense's only shot.
