The 2-2-1 concedes the inbound because it wants the ball in a corner, so X1 and X2 sit at the free throw line extended and never contest the pass; 2 v-cuts to the corner to receive.
5 inbounds to 2 in the corner. X2 picks him up a step off and on his inside shoulder so the only dribble is up the sideline, and X1 slides to the middle because the flash there is the one pass the press can't allow.
2 puts the ball on the floor up the sideline, which is the read the press waits for: once the dribble starts, X2 chases and turns him and X4 steps up from the middle line so the ball is stopped before half court.
The trap: X4 and X2 close knee to knee with high hands, because the sideline and the half-court line are the third and fourth defenders; no reaching. X1 is the middle interceptor, X3 drops toward the lane, X5 slides into the sideline lob lane, which forces every pass but the retreat into a covered lane.
2 can't lob up the sideline because X5 owns that lane and 1's middle flash is covered by X1, so the ball goes back to 5: the 2-2-1 trades the retreat pass for seconds on the ten count and never fouls to get it.
Counter: the offense reverses the ball to 1 on the weak side. The press concedes it and resets, because X1 picks up the ball on his inside shoulder, X2 sprints to the middle, X4 drops back to his line, and X3 is already set on that sideline.
1 drives the open sideline and the read repeats on the left: X1 turns him toward the line and X3 steps up to meet him, because the rules never change, only the names; 3 and 4 lift to the frontcourt sidelines to stretch the goalie.
Second trap on the far sideline, so the counter is answered: X3 and X1 close, X2 fills the middle lane, X4 sinks to the paint, and X5 slides to the left lob lane. The press has forced two sideline dribbles and given up nothing but a retreat pass.
1 throws the sideline lob the trap forced him into; X5 has been reading it from the goalie spot the whole time, so he steps into the lane and deflects it out of bounds: turnover, and everyone sprints to the paint to recover.
