X4 overplays the inbounder toward the middle and X1 sits behind 1, because the diamond concedes the corner catch on purpose: the sideline and baseline are extra defenders there. 1 v-cuts to the corner to receive.
3 throws to the corner. The read for the press is the catch below the free throw line extended: X1 closes while the ball is in the air and X4 releases the inbounder, because the trap has to arrive with the ball.
The trap: X4 and X1 close with high hands so the middle pass is gone, lower bodies taking space, no reaching. X2 slides to the middle, X3 to the sideline lane, X5 holds, which forces the only safe pass backward; 3 steps in on the weak lane line.
1 can't dribble and can't see over the trap, so he gives it back to 3 stepping in: the diamond trades that pass for time, because the count keeps running and the inbounder is the worst dribbler on the floor.
Counter: 3 attacks with the dribble up the weak sideline, the diamond's soft spot. The press answers because X4 sprints to the ball, X2 slides over to stop the sideline, and X3 drops to the middle, denying the flash.
The second trap on the sideline answers the counter: X2 and X4 close knee to knee, X3 fronts the middle, X1 drops to the far sideline lane, and X5 slides to the left lob lane, because 3 is a post player with no dribble left and the press wants him throwing.
3 does the only thing left and retreats it to 1 behind the ball; the press allows it every time, because that pass is the seventh second of the count and the offense is no closer to half court.
1 looks long and throws up the right sideline to 2; X1 has been sitting in that lane since the second trap, so he steps in and gets a hand on it, which is the pass the diamond has been forcing all along.
The deflection is a turnover: X1 collects it and everyone else sprints to the paint first, because a press that steals and then gives up a layup the other way has won nothing.
