3-out 2-in against the 2-3. Why the posts start on the blocks: the back of the zone is where the screens are set, and the posts are already there.
1 passes to 2 and the zone shifts to the ball: X4 up to the wing, X1 over, X5 to the ball-side block in front of 4, X3 into the lane. Why the first pass is to the wing: it pulls the whole zone to one side and leaves the weak-side forward alone with two offensive players.
5 slides from the weak block out to the weak corner, and 3 steps in and back-screens X3, the weak-side forward, pinning him inside. Why the pin: X3 is the only defender who can close out to the weak corner on a skip, and a screened X3 cannot.
3 steps in and back-screens X3, the weak-side forward, pinning him inside the lane. Why the screen is its own moment: a pin set a count early lets the forward slide around it, so 3 arrives as 5 arrives in the corner.
2 skips the ball over the top to 5 in the weak corner. X3 is pinned, X2 drops from the nail, X1 chases late. The read is X3: pinned, so 5 has the open three. Why the skip is thrown now: the pin lasts one second, and the pass has to be in the air before X3 fights over it.
5 catches in rhythm and shoots the open three. Score. Why the shot is open: the one defender responsible for that corner was standing behind a screen when the ball arrived.
Next trip, the adjustment: the zone has seen the pin, and this time X3 fights over the screen early and rotates out to the weak side on the first wing pass. The offense resets, 5 back on the weak block. Why the zone does this: it would rather give up the lane behind X3 than the corner three.
1 passes to 2 again and the zone shifts, but X3 cheats a step out toward 3 on the weak wing instead of sitting in the lane. Why this is the read for the counter: a forward who leaves the lane early has left the block behind him.
The counter: 5 stays on the weak block instead of sliding to the corner, and 2 skips to 3 on the wing. X3 rotates out to 3 as he planned. Why keep 5 low: the counter is not a three; it is the pass that follows the rotation.
As X3 rotates out, 4 cuts across and screens X5 so the middle cannot rotate down to the weak block, and 5 posts up on the block alone. Why the screen on the middle is the whole counter: with the forward out and the middle screened, the block has no defender at all.
3 makes the quick pass inside to 5 and 5 scores over nobody. Why the quick pass: the zone's guards are sinking, and a held ball lets X2 drop in; the pass is thrown on the catch.
5 lays it in. Score. Why the pin and the counter belong together: the first punishes a forward who stays home, and the second punishes a forward who leaves early, so the zone has no safe answer.
