The scouted 2-2-1 goes to '61': two front defenders deny 1 the inbound, because they would rather take a five-second call than let the point guard touch it. 1 reads it and walks both defenders toward the baseline to shorten the floor.
The read: the sidelines are denied too, so on a count of two 2 and 4 sprint their lanes all the way to the end line and bring X3 and X4 with them, which is why the middle of the floor behind the front line empties out.
Counter to the denial: 1 seals his two defenders and back-cuts over the top, because nobody is left above him; 2 and 4 back-cut long up the sidelines at the same time, so the three deniers are all behind the play.
3 lobs over the top to 1 at the three-point arc; the counter works because the denial pulled every interceptor below the ball, and the lob is thrown to a spot on the run, not to a standing player.
1 looks up and 2 is ahead of X3 after the back cut, so the pass goes ahead because the ball moves faster than a defender can sprint; X5 has to pick a side now.
2 attacks across half court; X5 and the recovering X3 try to trap him on the frontcourt sideline, which is why 1 fills the middle behind the play and 4 runs the far lane: a trap up here leaves the rim with nobody.
2 passes out of the trap to 1 in the middle before it closes, because the pass out of a trap is thrown on the first step of the second defender, not after he arrives.
1 attacks the paint with the dribble; X2 and X1 are still sprinting back from the baseline and X4 from the far sideline, so it's three on one at the rim and 5 fills the near block.
X5 steps up to the ball, so 1 kicks to 4 at the wing, because the one defender back can't guard the ball and the weak side.
4 drives the open side to the rim; nobody rotates because nobody is there, which is why the press break attacks to score instead of pulling it out.
4 finishes the layup; the denial gave up the lob because it had to, and the lob gave up the layup.
