The overload: 1 in the right slot, 2 on the right wing, 4 in the corner, 5 in the short corner, 3 at the high post. The zone has three players for four on the right. Why the zone does not panic: it guards spots, not players, and the spots on the right are the spots it is built to cover.
1 passes to 2 and X4 sprints up on the flight. Why X4 goes even with 5 behind him in the short corner: the wing catch is the one that can be a shot; the short corner catch is a catch the zone is willing to concede.
X1 bumps X4 down and X4 settles with his eyes on 5 in the short corner behind him; X2 fronts 3 at the high post, X5 on the block, X3 in the lane. Why X4 drops to the short corner and not the corner: with the ball on the wing, the short corner is the shorter pass.
2 passes down to 5 in the short corner. X4 takes the catch with high hands and no baseline, X5 fills the block X4 left, X3 slides to the rim, X1 sinks toward the lane, X2 stays on the high post. Why the fill matters most: the moment X4 steps to the ball, the block behind him is the next pass, and X5 has to already be there. The zone has forced a catch with the player's back to the rim.
5 has no drop-off and passes out to 4 in the corner. X4 steps out to the corner, X5 fronts the block, X3 holds the rim. Why the zone concedes this pass: it goes sideways along the baseline to a worse spot, with the same three defenders around it.
4 throws it back to 2 and the zone recovers to its wing picture on the flight. Why the overload is now failing: four players on one side have produced two catches the zone wanted to give up and no shot.
2 passes back to 1 in the slot and the zone recovers to its base. Why X2 stays near the high post as he recovers: 3 is still standing there, and the high post is the one catch the overload could turn into points.
3 pops from the high post out to the empty left wing. Why the offense does this: the overload has stretched the zone right, and the skip out of it is the shot the overload is designed to create.
1 skips the ball across to 3. X3 runs out of the lane on the flight and X2 sprints over. Why the zone is not late: X3 never left the weak side during the overload, which is exactly why the zone keeps one forward home when the offense stacks a side.
X2 bumps X3 down, X5 crosses the lane, X1 drops to the nail, X4 to the weak rim. The zone is set on the left before 3 can shoot. Why the skip out of an overload is the pass the zone wants: it is the longest pass on the floor and it leaves four offensive players on the wrong side.
3 is contained on the left wing with no drive middle, no block, and three teammates still on the other side of the floor. Stop. Why the overload lost: the zone conceded two harmless catches and forced the offense to throw the one pass it could cover with time to spare.
