The sideline box, 3 inbounding, 2 on the ball-side block. Why the lob is a sideline play too: the inbounder has the angle to the rim that a baseline inbounder does not.
On the handoff, 5 steps across from the weak elbow and back-screens X2, the ball-side block's defender. Why the screen comes from the weak side: X2 is watching the ball on the sideline, and the screen arrives from the side he is not watching.
2 cuts off the back screen to the rim for the first lob. The read is X2: he has lost sight of 2 behind the screen. Why the cut goes to the front of the rim: a lob needs the cutter between the ball and the rim, not on the baseline.
3 throws the lob over X2 to 2 at the rim and 2 finishes. Score. Why the first lob is thrown: the defender was screened on his back and is still turning.
2 finishes the lob. Score. Why the play has a second lob ready: if X4 had helped on 2, the next frame would have screened him.
Next trip, the adjustment: the defense switches the back screens now, X5 jumping to the cutter as the screen is set. Reset to the sideline box with 3 inbounding. Why the switch: it is the only coverage that puts a defender at the rim before the cutter.
5 back-screens X2 again and 2 curls off it; X5 switches onto 2 and X2 stays on 5. The read for the counter: the switch has the big on the cutter and the small on the screener. Why the first cut still goes: the counter needs the switch to happen.
2 starts his curl to the rim and X5 goes with him; 5, with the smaller X2 now on his back, steps back toward the ball as the entry. Why the screener steps back: the Coaching Toolbox's rule for Portland is that against a switch the inbound goes to the screener stepping back to the ball.
3 inbounds to 5 stepping back, and 2 fakes a curl back out toward the wing to pull X5 up. Why the fake curl: Kansas's counter is that the defense, having seen the curl, jumps to it, and the back cut goes behind the jump.
The counter: 2 plants at the wing and back-cuts hard to the rim behind X5, who jumped to the fake curl. Why the back cut beats the switch: the switched big was told to take the cutter at the rim, and the cutter went there after the big left it.
5 passes to 2 at the rim and 2 lays it in. Why the pass comes from 5: he has the ball above the play with the smaller defender on him, and the pass is a short one down.
2 scores. Score. Why the lob and the back cut belong together: a defense that trails gives up the lob, and a defense that switches gives up the cut behind the switch.
