Drill: Pitino (Partner Five-Spot Race)
5 spots, 3
shots each:
30 total
1
2
Spot one, the right corner: 2 passes to 1 and the race is on, five spots, three shots each partner, thirty shots a pair, because the first pair done stops the round for everyone and the makes decide it.
Shot one is the drive: 1 attacks the baseline in a straight line to the rim, no wasted dribble, because the race tempts players into lazy finishes and the layup has to be a real one.
1 finishes at the rim with the correct hand, the outside hand on a baseline drive, so the ball is protected from where a defender would be even though nobody is there.
2 takes the ball out of the net and 1 sprints straight back to the corner cone for shot two, because the rebounder's speed is the pair's clock and the shooter has to be set before the outlet arrives.
2 outlets to 1 in the corner, a pass to the pocket, so the one or two dribbles that follow start from a shooting position and look like a game move.
Shot two is off the dribble: 1 takes one or two dribbles toward the free throw line extended with purpose, the coaching point being to square up on the pull-up, because a drifting pull-up is a miss and a wasted trip back to the corner.
1 rises for the pull-up jumper, balanced and landing where he took off, because shot two counts the same as the layup: one point, no style bonus.
2 collects the ball again and 1 runs back behind the corner cone with his feet ready before the catch, because shot three is the catch-and-shoot three and the feet are what make it.
2 passes to 1 in the corner for the three; the rebounder reads the shooter's feet and throws the instant they are set, otherwise the shooter stands waiting and the pair falls behind in the race.
1 shoots the three, shot three of three at spot one. Now the partners switch, 2 takes the same three shots while 1 rebounds, then both move to the right wing, because every spot gets six shots and the pair with the most makes out of thirty wins.
