The 1-3-1: X1 the chaser at the top, X2 and X3 the wings at free-throw line extended, X5 the middle fronting the post, X4 the baseline runner under the rim. Why the shape: it puts a defender in every passing lane from the top, which the 2-3 leaves open, at the cost of one low defender.
X1 steps up and forces 1 to pick a side, shading him right. Why force a side: the 1-3-1 traps on the wings and in the corners, and the chaser's job is to decide which side before the pass; the zone's advantage starts with the offense playing on the half of the floor the defense chose.
1 passes to 2 on the right wing. X3 takes the ball, X1 drops to the ball-side elbow to form a soft trap, X2 sinks to the weak-side block, X4 slides along the baseline to the ball side. Why X2 drops: with one wing up the other must be down, or the weak block is empty; the zone concedes the skip pass to keep the block.
2 passes to 4 in the corner. X4 closes out on the catch, X3 drops in behind him, X1 slides to the high post, X2 covers the low block. Why the runner takes the corner: nobody else in the 1-3-1 is near the baseline, which is why the runner must be the fastest player on the team.
4 throws it back to 2 and the zone recovers to its wing picture. Why the 1-3-1 concedes the return pass: the ball is going back up the sideline toward the chaser and away from the rim.
2 skips the ball across to 3. X2 runs out from the weak block, X1 slides across the top toward the new ball side, X3 sinks to the weak block, X4 sprints the baseline to the left, X5 shades left. Why this is the slide that decides the 1-3-1: the runner has the longest sprint on the floor, and if he is late the corner is open; the zone concedes the catch and bets on arriving before the next pass.
3 passes to 5 in the left corner. X4 arrives and closes out, X2 drops in behind him, X1 to the high post, X3 to the low block, X5 shades the ball-side post. Why the zone is fine with the ball in the corner again: the corner is where the 1-3-1 traps, and the sideline and baseline are its third and fourth defender.
The trap closes: X2 comes down from the wing to join X4 on 5 with their feet together, X5 fronts the block, X3 holds the rim, X1 sits at the high post reading the lob out. Why the 1-3-1 traps here by rule and the 2-3 by choice: the 1-3-1 already has two defenders at the corner on the catch, so the trap costs it nothing extra.
5 is forced to throw a lob out to 1 at the top, the only pass left, and X1 jumps the lane toward it. Why the lob is the pass the 1-3-1 wants to force: it is long, high, and slow, and the chaser is the fastest player to it.
X1 gets a hand on the lob: deflection, loose ball, possession over. Why the 1-3-1 is a change-up and not a base for youth: this possession worked because the runner won his sprint; one late slide and the corner is a layup, and that risk is the price of the traps.
