The zone is shifted to 2 on the right wing, with 4 in the corner and 5 on the ball-side block behind X5. Why this is the zone's decision point: the next pass is going to the corner, and the coach has to have called contain or trap before it leaves.
Contain. 2 passes to 4 and X4 steps out with high hands and no baseline; X5 fronts 5 on the block immediately, X3 slides to the rim, X1 sinks, X2 drops onto the high post. Why contain is the default: it gives up nothing short and forces the offense to make a long pass to continue.
4 throws it back to 2 and the zone recovers to its wing picture. Why the zone concedes this pass: it is going away from the basket, and the offense has to start over.
2 skips it to 3. X3 runs out, X2 sprints over, and on the flight the zone starts the on-and-off. Why the offense skips here: it is looking for the open side after the corner pass pulled the zone down.
X2 bumps X3 down, X5 crosses, X1 to the nail, X4 to the weak rim. The zone is set on the left before 3 can do anything. Why the skip got nothing: the forward was on the catch and the guard was there a step later.
3 reverses to 1 at the top and the zone recovers to its base. Why the zone is fine with the ball at the top: it concedes the shot from there, and the guards are already home.
1 passes to 2 and X4 sprints up on the flight. The coach has now called the trap for the next corner pass. Why call it before the pass: a trap decided after the catch is a trap that arrives late, and a late trap is a foul.
X1 bumps X4 down and the zone sets to the wing. Why nothing looks different yet: the trap is a secret until the corner pass, and showing it early sends the ball somewhere else.
Trap. 2 passes to 4 and X4 steps out while X1 follows the pass down from the wing; the two close on 4 with their feet together and hands high, sealing the baseline and the sideline. X5 fronts 5, X3 slides to the rim, X2 drops to the elbow to read the lob. Why feet together: a gap between the trappers is a split, and a split trap is a layup.
4 picks up his dribble with the baseline sealed, the block fronted, the rim covered, and X2 sitting on the lob. He has no pass he can make quickly. Why this is the trap's advantage: in the corner the offense has only long passes, and a long pass out of a trap is a deflection or a five-second count.
Held ball, turnover. Why the zone can afford the risk here and nowhere else: a trap at the top or on the wing leaves a short pass open; a trap in the corner leaves only the lob, and the lob is covered.
