Five-out with the post as the hub: 5 at the top with the ball, 1 and 4 in the slots, 2 and 3 deep in the corners. Why the corners are deep: the zoom needs the receiver to run a long way into the handoff, and a corner player who creeps up has no runway.
5 takes two dribbles toward the right slot and 4 drops from the slot to set a pin-down on X3 in the corner, with his back lined up with 5. Why the screen angle matters: the receiver has to come off the screen straight at the handoff, so the screener's back points at the ball.
4 sets the pin-down on X3. Why the pin-down and not just a handoff: it is the first of two screens one count apart, and a defender who guards the first is late to the second.
3 jab-steps to set up X3, then sprints over the pin-down toward the wing as 5 dribbles at him. The read is X3: he trails over the screen. Why the sprint: Coach's Clipboard's rule is that the receiver cuts around the handoff at high speed, because the speed is the separation.
5 hands the ball to 3 at the wing. Why a handoff instead of a pass: 5's body is between 3 and the trailing X3 for one count, and that count is the drive.
3 turns the corner downhill toward the elbow with X3 behind him, 5 rolls to the rim, and 4 lifts from his screen to the vacated slot. X5 has to step up. Why 4 lifts: his defender has to choose between helping on the roll and taking away the catch-and-shoot behind the action.
With X5 up on the ball, 3 throws the pocket pass to 5 rolling. Why the roller is open: the handoff defender is behind the ball, and the roller's defender had to leave him to stop the drive.
5 finishes at the rim. Score. Why this is the first play of the family: one pin-down, one handoff, and one read, and every other play is this one with a different answer.
Next trip, the adjustment: the defense switches the pin-down, X4 stepping up to take 3 as he comes off the screen and X3 staying on 4. Reset to five-out with 5 at the top. Why the switch: it is the only way to be on the receiver at the handoff, and it costs the defense the block behind the switch.
1 passes back to 5 and 5 dribbles toward the right slot; 4 drops to set the pin-down and X4 jumps up above it early, ready to switch onto 3. The read for the counter: X4 has left the block before the screen is set. Why the read is early: a switching defender has to beat the cutter to the spot, so he goes before the screen.
The counter: 4 shows the screen and slips it to the rim before it is set, while 3 keeps sprinting to the wing as the decoy. Why the slip: Hooper University's rule for the switched zoom is that the pin-down screener slips to the rim, because the defender who stepped up to switch is standing where the screener used to be guarded.
5 pitches from the slot to 4 at the rim. Why the pass is there: both defenders of the pin-down are above the play with the decoy, and the rim has nobody.
4 lays it in. Score. Why the zoom survives a switch: the switch guards the receiver, and the slip punishes the one defender who had to leave the rim to do it.
