The box with 2.8 seconds on the clock, 3 inbounding. Why the clock changes the play and not the formation: under three seconds the shot has to be the catch, so every action has to end at a shooting pocket.
On the handoff, 5 and 4 take one hard step up from the blocks and set stationary screens on the lane lines, below the elbows. Why below: Fratello's rule is that the screeners must be lower than the shooters so the defenders cannot slide under the screens.
2 and 1 fake one step inside toward the screens, then sprint off them, 2 to the ball-side wing and 1 to the weak wing. The read is X2: he trails over 5's screen. Why the fake first: it makes the defender take one step toward the lane, and that step is the separation.
3 inbounds to 2 in the shooting pocket on the wing and 2 shoots on the catch with X2 behind the screen. Score. Why the pass is to the wing and not the corner: the wing catch faces the basket already, and the corner catch has to turn.
2 shoots. Score. Why the shot goes up with no dribble: a dribble with under three seconds is a shot that never happens.
Next trip, the adjustment: the defense has seen it and X2 top-locks 2, standing on the high side of him at the elbow to deny the pop to the wing. Reset to the box, 3 inbounding. Why the top-lock: it is the one coverage that takes away a catch-and-shoot pop, at the price of the backdoor.
5 and 4 step up and set the same screens and 1 sprints to the weak wing. The read for the counter: X2 is above 2, on the high side, with nobody between 2 and the rim. Why the screens are still set: the counter is the same play with one player's cut reversed.
The counter: 2 plants his outside foot as if to pop, then cuts backdoor through the middle of the paint to the rim, and 1 sprints to the weak wing to pull X1 with him. Why the plant: a top-locking defender is leaning to the wing, and the plant sends him there.
3 throws the lead pass to 2 at the rim and 2 lays it in. Why the pass leads him: with the defender on the high side there is nobody to beat but the clock, and the ball has to arrive in stride.
2 scores at the rim. Score. Why the low-clock play has a counter at all: a defense that has seen the pop once will top-lock it, and the backdoor is the only cut that beats a top-lock.
