Two-up: the 2-2-1 knows 1 inbounds and wants it right back, so X2 will deny the return pass man-to-man while the other four stay in the zone; the press concedes the corner catch to 2 because 2 is not the one who breaks presses.
1 inbounds to 2 and steps in looking for it back, but X2 jumps into the lane between them in full denial, because the point guard is the one player who can beat the press; X1 slides across to pressure 2 from the inside.
The read: 2 has to dribble because the reverse to 1 is denied, and X1 steers him up the sideline; X4 steps up from the middle line to stop him, which forces a weak handler into the trap area with the count running.
The trap: X4 and X1 close knee to knee with hands at the height of the ball. X3 slides into the middle lane, X5 to the sideline lob lane, and X2 stays glued to 1, so the press gives up only the long cross-court pass to the weak side on purpose.
Counter: 2 throws the long cross-court pass to 3 on the open weak side, the pass the two-up gives up by design. It's slow in the air, which is why X3 and X5 start moving on the release instead of the catch.
The press answers the counter: X3 closes on 3 from the inside, X1 sprints to the middle lane, X4 slides to the left side of the middle line, and X2 never leaves 1. 3 has to dribble up the left sideline because the reverse is still denied.
3 passes up the sideline to 4, the pass the press allows because that is exactly where it traps; X4 is already stepping up and X3 follows the ball, so 4 catches with the ten-second line in front of him and the sideline beside him.
Second trap on the sideline, counter answered: X4 and X3 close on 4, X1 holds the middle, X2 is still on 1, and X5 reads the cross-court lane, because a post player in a trap is the matchup the press has been working for; 5 lifts to the far sideline.
4 panics and throws cross court to 5; X5 has been sitting in that lane since the first trap, so he steps in and steals it: turnover, and the press runs out the other way.
