Drill: Pressure Jump Shots
four lines, four
balls: go
1
2

5
Four lines, four balls: 1, 2, 3, and 4 are the front of each line, 5 waits behind 1 at the right elbow. On go every first player shoots; 1's is the ball drawn, because each line runs its own race on its own ball.
1 chases his own shot to the rim, make or miss, because nobody rebounds for anybody in this drill and a line without its ball is a line standing still.
1 fires the ball back to 5, the next player in the line he just left, a crisp return pass to the hands, so he is shooting the instant it arrives; a lazy return pass is the one mistake that slows all four lines.
The shot was good, so 1 jogs to the back of the next line clockwise, the right wing behind 3, and 5 steps up to the elbow spot, because a make is the only way to move and two makes from every spot is the goal.
5 shoots from the right elbow with no hesitation; the pressure is the clock in his head and the player behind him waiting, which is why the shot has to be the same one he takes in warm-ups.
5 misses and goes to get it himself; a miss sends him to the back of the same line, not forward, so a miss costs time in the race rather than reps, and the coaching point is to stay calm, because the rushed next shot is how one miss becomes three.
5 takes the ball back to his own line and hands it to whoever is next; with nobody else drawn in his line he is up again, so he resets his feet at the elbow before he shoots instead of turning and firing.
5 shoots again from the same spot. The race runs until a player has eight makes, two from each line, or until time; the point is that an open jump shot with a consequence attached is a different shot from the one taken alone in a gym.
