Drill: Stationary Dribbling Series
coach
1
2
Pound dribble, right hand: 1 hammers the ball at the waist, then lower and lower until he is almost on a knee, then back up, because the pound teaches fingertips and force; eyes stay on the coach, never the ball.
Kills: dribble waist high, snap the ball to the ankle and hold it there two seconds, then back to the waist, both hands; the point is to sit the hips to get low, otherwise players bend at the waist and lose their balance.
Figure 8, first half: 1 dribbles the ball around the outside of his left foot and through the legs, head up and eyes on the leader, because a handler who has to look down to find the ball cannot see the floor in a game.
Figure 8, second half: around the outside of the right foot and back through, so the ball traces an 8 around both feet; it stays below the knee the whole way, which is why the stance has to be wide and low.
Spider and crossover: right hand, left hand in front, then both hands behind the knees, then one low crossover below the knee, so the ball stays under the body; on the coach's call everyone switches hands and the series resets.
