Base 2-3 with 4 and 5 on the blocks and three outside. Why this offense is dangerous to a zone: two post players under the rim means two offensive rebounders already inside the triangle.
1 passes to 2 and X4 sprints up on the flight. Why the forward goes even with 4 on the block behind him: the wing catch can be a shot, and X5 will have the block.
X1 bumps X4 down, X5 slides to the block in front of 4, X2 to the nail, X3 into the lane. Why the zone is set: 2 has no drive middle and no entry to 4, so it has forced another pass.
2 reverses to 1 and the zone recovers to its base. Why the reversal is the zone's friend: it is a pass away from the rim that costs the offense time.
1 swings to 3 and X3 sprints up on the flight, the left side as fast as the right. Why: a zone offense swings to find the slow side, and the zone's advantage is that it does not have one.
X2 bumps X3 down, X5 slides to 5 on the left block, X1 to the nail, X4 into the lane. Why X5 crosses on every reversal: the block he leaves is the block the next pass attacks.
3 skips it across to 2. X4 runs out of the lane, X1 sprints over, X5 crosses back. Why the forward is on the catch: the skip is in the air long enough, and the zone's rule is to leave on the flight.
X1 bumps X4 down and takes 2 with a hand up. The offense has swung and skipped and is back to a contested wing three with the clock low. Why the zone will let this shot go: it is the shot the zone concedes, as long as the next frame happens.
2 shoots over X1's contest. Shot. Why nobody watches: the zone's job on this shot is the rebound, and a zone that watches the flight gives the shot back.
The triangle forms on the shot: X1 boxes the shooter, X5 holds the front of the rim, X4 takes the ball-side block and finds 4, X3 takes the weak block and finds 5, and X2 drops from the nail to the free-throw line for the long bounce. Why a triangle plus a guard at the line: wing misses go long and opposite most of the time, so the weak block and the free-throw line are where this ball lands.
The miss comes off long to the weak side and X3, with 5 boxed behind him, gets the rebound. Possession over. Why this is the only way the zone's deal works: a contested three the zone rebounds is the best outcome of the possession; the same shot given back to the offense is the worst.
