Five-out: 1 at the top, 4 and 5 in the slots, 2 the shooter in the right corner, 3 in the left corner. Why both bigs are in the slots: one gives the handoff and one sets the screen, and both start where the defense sags off them.
1 passes to 4 in the right slot and 4 dribbles toward the right wing as 2 lifts from the corner to meet him. Why 2 lifts into the handoff: a receiver who comes to the ball arrives with momentum, and momentum is what the ball screen needs next.
4 dribbles at 2 lifting to the wing. The read is X2: he trails 2 up from the corner. Why the dribble at the receiver: it makes 4's body the screen, and a trailing defender runs into it.
4 hands off to 2 at the wing. Why the handoff is the first screen: Miami is two screens one count apart, and this is the first.
4 runs to the right low post after the handoff to hold X4 and the help, 1 relocates to the left slot, 3 drops to the left corner, and 5 lifts from the left slot toward the top. Why 4 goes to the post: his defender is the one who would help on the drive, and a big on the block keeps him there.
5 sets the ball screen at the right slot on X2, who is still trailing from the handoff. Why the screen is on a trailing defender: a defender who is already behind the ball cannot get over a screen, so the screen takes him out for good.
2 comes off 5's screen toward the middle, 5 rolls, and X5 drops to the elbow. The read is X5: dropped. Why the drop: with X2 behind the play the big has to protect the rim, and a dropped big gives the elbow.
2 pulls up at the elbow and scores. Score. Why the shot is the elbow and not the layup: the drop gives it, and a pull-up off two screens is a shot a shooter makes.
Next trip, the adjustment: the defense switches the handoff, X4 jumping to 2 as he lifts and X2 taking 4. Reset to five-out with 1 at the top. Why the switch: it puts a defender on the shooter before the ball screen, and it puts a guard on the big who has the ball.
1 brings the ball back to the top and five-out is rebuilt. Why the same picture: the switch the defense is about to show only comes against the handoff it saw.
1 passes to 4 in the right slot. Why the same entry: the switch only shows itself against the handoff it is waiting for.
4 dribbles at 2 lifting from the corner, and X4 jumps up to 2 before the handoff while X2 sinks to take 4. The read for the counter: the switch is early, and the defender in front of 4 is the guard. Why the read is early: a switching defense has to beat the handoff, so it shows before it.
The counter: 4 fakes the handoff to 2 and keeps the ball, driving at the switching X2 toward the middle, while 2 continues to the wing as the decoy and 3 clears to the far corner. Why the keep: Half Court Hoops' dribble keep is for exactly this; the guard who switched onto a big is a guard a big drives through.
4 finishes at the rim through the smaller defender. Score. Why the switch loses here: it was built to stop the shooter, and the big never gave up the ball.
