Drill: Full-Court Zig-Zag
line, one
ball each
1
2
1 takes two hard dribbles with the right hand at a forty-five degree angle toward the first cone, pushing the ball out in front so he can run, because a ball dribbled beside the body cannot be dribbled at speed.
At the cone he plants the outside foot, swings the ball across below the knee, and pushes off into two dribbles with the left hand, because a crossover above the knee is a crossover a defender takes.
Two dribbles right again, forty-five degrees, eyes on the middle of the floor and not on the direction he is running, so he sees the whole court the way he will have to in a game.
Plant and change direction at the fourth cone; a player who rounds the cut instead of planting never truly changes direction, which is why each cone scores one point only when the plant is sharp.
Fifth cone, same move, same pace: fatigue shows up as a high dribble and a slower plant, so the coaching point late in the trip is to stay as low on the last cone as on the first.
At the last cone 1 plants, turns, and zig-zags back to the start, and 2 leaves the baseline so the lane stays busy; next trip the move changes to between the legs, and the line resets after each full trip.
