The one-guard front the entry leaves: 1 on top, 5 at the right elbow, 3 on the left wing, 2 and 4 in the corners. 1 enters the ball to 5, because the Point phase begins the moment the hub catches at the elbow.
1 cuts away and sets a screen at the left elbow for 3, because the passer in Point never stands; Away means his screen goes to the other side of the lane.
3 reads X3 chasing over the top of the screen and rejects it, back cutting to the rim, because a defender who has committed over the screen has nobody between the wing and the basket.
The scouted adjustment: X4 leaves the left corner and drops to the rim to take the back cut, so 5 holds. 3 finishes through to the right corner and 2 lifts to the right wing, because a cutter who is not fed keeps filling and the shooter above him lifts.
1 second cuts straight back to the top the moment 3 goes, because a quick second cut is the Point rule that produces the shot: the post is looking there the instant the cutter is covered.
5 passes to 1 at the top, because the second cutter arrived before X1 could recover from helping on the cut.
5 follows his pass and sets the middle ball screen for 1, because the rule is that whenever the post hits the second cutter he screens for him next.
Counter: 1 looks at the screen and rejects it, driving left, because X5 hedged high above the screen and the drive away from a hedge is open; 4 lifts off the baseline as X4 steps in to help, which is the second thing the hedge cost them.
Counter finished: 1 kicks to 4 lifting on the left wing, because the corner defender who helped twice in one possession cannot get back to a shooter who moved up the line.
4 shoots the open three; the entry, the rejected screen, the second cut, and the rejected ball screen each took the defense where it had already decided to go, which is why Point Away is read rather than run.
