The 1-3-1 lets the inbound go to a side because the chaser X1 can only take one of them: he turns his shoulders to that side and keeps the ball there, X2 fronts the middle, and the wings sit near half court; it concedes the first pass to trap the second.
5 inbounds to 2; X1 closes from the inside so the only dribble is up the sideline, forcing the ball wide, and X2 fronts 4's flash to the middle, because the middle is the one pass that beats a 1-3-1.
2 takes the sideline with the dribble, which is the read the wing waits for: X4 steps up near half court because the wings never give up the sideline in the backcourt, and X1 chases from behind; 5 steps in behind the ball.
The trap: X4 and X1 close on the sideline; X2 fronts the middle, X3 sinks toward the goal like a piston, and X5 reads the sideline lob, because every pass but the retreat has to be forced into a covered lane.
2 can't pass up the line or inside, so the ball goes back to 5; the 1-3-1 trades the retreat pass for seconds on the count, because the press resets as the ball comes back and nothing has been gained.
Counter: the offense swings it to 1 on the far side before the chaser can get there. The press answers because X1 sprints to where the dribbler is going, not where the ball is, X4 drops back to his line, and X3 is already set on that sideline.
1 is influenced to the sideline again; X3 steps up and the trap forms a second time on the other side, which answers the counter because the rules don't change, only the names; 3 lifts to the far sideline to stretch the goalie.
Second trap: X3 and X1 close, X2 fronts 4's flash in the middle, X4 sinks to the far lane, and X5 slides to the left lob lane, so the press has forced two sideline dribbles and conceded only a retreat pass.
1 throws the lob up the sideline the trap forced; X5 has been reading it from the goalie spot, so he steps into the lane and deflects it out of bounds: turnover, press wins, everyone sprints to the paint.
