The box again, 3 inbounding. Why this play starts with the elbows and not the blocks: a lob needs an empty lane, and the elbows are the two players standing in it.
On the handoff, 2 pops from the ball-side elbow to the ball-side corner and 1 pops to the weak wing. X2 and X1 go with them and the lane is empty. Why the pops look like the safety and the shooter: they are, on every other box play, which is why the defense goes with them.
5 steps across the lane and back-screens X4, the weak-side post's defender. Why the back screen and not a cross screen: X4 is between 4 and the basket, and the screen on his back is the one he cannot see.
4 plants hard, then cuts over 5's screen to the front of the rim. The read is X4's head: he turned to find the ball, and the cut goes behind him. Why the plant: a lock-and-trail defender reads the first step, and the plant makes the first step a lie.
3 throws the two-handed overhead lob to the rim side away from X4 and 4 catches and finishes. Score. Why over the top: X4 is behind the screen and X5 is on 5, so the only pass is one nobody can reach.
4 finishes the lob. Score. Why the lob beats lock-and-trail: a defender who trails his man over every screen is a defender who arrives second at the rim.
Next trip, the adjustment: the defense has seen the lob and switches the back screen, X5 jumping to the cutter and X4 taking the screener. Reset to the box, 3 inbounding. Why the switch: it is the only coverage that gets a defender to the rim before the cutter.
The elbows pop again, 2 to the corner and 1 to the wing, emptying the lane as before. Why the same pops: the counter needs the same picture the defense adjusted to.
5 back-screens X4 again, and this time X5 jumps to 4's cut before it starts. The read for the counter: X5 has left 5. Why the read is clear: a switching defense shows it on the screen, not on the cut.
X5 slides down to take the cutter and X4 stays on the screener. Why the switch shows itself here: the defender who is going to switch has to move before the cutter, or he is late to the rim.
The counter: 4 clears to the opposite block, taking X5 with him, and 5 seals X4, the switched defender, on his back and rolls to the ball-side block. Why 4 clears: he is the decoy now, and the player he takes with him is the one who guards the rim.
3 inbounds to 5 on the seal and 5 scores. Why the pass is a bounce pass and not a lob now: the switched defender is on 5's back, and the ball has to come in low under his reach.
5 lays it in. Score. Why Coach's Clipboard names it 54: the big who screens is the one who scores when the defense switches, and a defense that does not switch gives up the lob.
