Youth Man: Jump to the Ball

1 at the top against five-out. X1 on the ball, X2 and X3 in deny one pass away, the corners on the help line. Why this offense is the test: five-out is pass and cut, and a man defense that does not jump to the ball gives the first give-and-go a layup.
1 passes to 2. On the flight X1 jumps toward the ball into a deny, between 1 and the ball, not toward 1. X2 closes, X4 denies the corner, X3 and X5 drop to the help line. Why X1 jumps before 1 moves: the cut is coming, and a defender who waits to see it is already behind it.
1 cuts to the basket off his pass, the give-and-go. X1 is already between him and the ball and slides with him, hand in the lane, head turned to see both. Why the cut is denied without a reach: X1 won the position on the flight of the pass, so the cutter runs into his back; the defense concedes the cut, not the catch.
Denied, 1 clears out to the left corner while 5 fills the left wing and 3 fills the top. X1 goes with 1 to the help line, X3 jumps up to deny 3 at the top, X5 drops to the help line on 5. Why the defense is comfortable with the fill: three players moved and none of them got closer to the rim.
2 reverses the ball to 3 at the top. X3 closes, X2 jumps to the ball into a deny on 2, X5 denies 5 on the left wing, X4 and X1 to the help line. Why X2 jumps now: he is the passer's defender, and the passer is about to cut; the defense concedes the reversal and takes the cut.
2 cuts to the basket off his pass and X2, already between him and the ball, slides with him and denies. Why the second give-and-go fails like the first: the jump is a rule, not a reaction, so it is there every time.
2 clears to the right corner and 4 lifts to the right wing. X2 drops to the help line on 2, X4 comes up to deny 4. Why the defense lets the offense rotate freely: every rotation puts the cutter in a corner and a new player one pass away, which is exactly where the deny is waiting.
3 passes to 5 on the left wing. X5 closes, X3 jumps to the ball into a deny on 3, X1 denies the corner, X4 and X2 to the help line. Why the whole defense moves on the flight: the man rules are about the ball, and jumping to the ball is just the passer's version of them.
3 cuts to the basket off his pass and X3 denies it, between the cutter and the ball. Three cuts, three denials. Why the offense keeps cutting: it is the only play it knows, and the defense's advantage is that the answer is the same every time.
3 fills back out to the top, the only open spot, with X3 riding him up into a deny. Why nobody is open: three cutters went to the basket and all three ended up back on the perimeter, which is the only place the defense will let them be.
5 has no cutter to hit and passes back out to 3 at the top with the clock gone. X3 closes, X5 jumps to the ball. Contained. Why the possession never got inside: every pass was followed by a cut, every cut ran into a defender who had jumped to the ball first, and the offense was forced back to the arc each time.
