Five-out with 5 at the top, 1 and 4 in the slots, 2 and 3 in the corners, and a defense that has seen the zoom. Why this play exists: the zoom's first option gets taken away by good defenses, and the offense has to know what each denial opens.
5 dribbles toward the right slot and 4 drops to pin down for 3. X3 top-locks: he stands on the high side of 3, chest to shoulder, between 3 and the screen. The read: the high side. Why the top-lock: it is the only way to keep 3 from using the pin-down, and it leaves the rim side open.
The counter: 3 back-cuts along the baseline to the rim behind the top-lock and 5 throws the pass over the top. Why the back-cut is open: X3 chose the high side to deny the screen, so the low side is his to give.
5 passes to 3 at the rim and 3 lays it in. Score. Why Coach Hoops calls this zoom reject: the receiver rejects the handoff he was never going to get and takes the layup the denial left.
3 scores. Score. Why the next trip is different: the defense now covers the back-cut with its low man, which opens the second counter.
Next trip, the adjustment: X3 still top-locks, but X2 sinks from the far corner to the rim to take away the back-cut. Reset: 5 at the top, 4 and 1 in the slots, 3 and 2 in the corners. Why the defense does this: it has decided to deny the receiver entirely and pay for it with the weak corner.
5 dribbles toward the slot and 4 drops to pin down; X3 top-locks again and X2 is waiting at the rim, so 3 clears through to the weak side. The read for counter two: the receiver is denied and the back-cut is covered. Why 3 clears: a denied player who stays is a player the denial keeps winning on.
Counter two: 4, the screener, turns from his pin-down, sprints around 5, and takes the handoff himself. Why the screener: Coach's Clipboard's screener DHO rule is that when the corner is aggressively denied, the screener turns and takes the handoff, and his defender is below the play.
5 hands off to 4 and 4 attacks downhill with X4 trailing from below; 5 rolls. Why the two-man action works: the defense spent two defenders denying 3 and has one on the player who actually has the ball.
4 drives the lane off the handoff and 5 rolls behind him; X5 steps up to the ball. Why 4 goes to the rim: his defender is behind him and the low man is on the far block with 3.
4 pulls up at the elbow and scores over the late step-up. Score. Why counter three exists too: when X3 jumps the handoff instead of denying it, 5 fakes the handoff and keeps it, which is the same lane 4 just used.
