Two-guard front against the 3-2: 1 and 2 in the slots outside X2 and X3, 3 the shooter in the right corner, 4 and 5 in the gaps just above X4 and X5, X1 the rover at the free-throw line. Why the posts are in the gaps and not on the blocks: a post in front of a low defender is covered; a post between two is not.
5 flashes from the left gap into the middle of the lane, below the rover and above the low defenders, calling for the ball. Why the middle of the lane and not the free-throw line: the rover owns the free-throw line, and the lane below him is the hole in the 3-2.
1 passes to 5 in the middle. X1 drops onto him from behind, X4 and X5 pinch, the wings sink. 5 catches, pivots, and faces the rim. The read is X4, the left low defender: he pinches to the ball, so 4 is open at the right block behind X5's pinch. Why the catch is the whole play: a player in the middle of a 3-2 facing the rim sees both blocks and both corners.
4 steps from the gap to the right block as X5 pinches toward the ball. Why 4 is open: the low defender on his side left the block to help on the middle catch.
5 drops the ball to 4 at the block. Why the drop is quick: the pinch lasts a count, and a held ball lets X5 get back to his block.
4 lays it in. Score. Why the 3-2 gives this up: it has three defenders up and two low, and a catch in the middle makes both low defenders choose between the ball and their blocks.
Next trip, the adjustment: the zone has seen the flash, and now X1 sags into the lane to deny the middle while the low defenders stay home. Reset: 1 and 2 in the slots, 3 in the right corner, 4 and 5 in the gaps. Why the zone does this: it is giving up the top shot to close the hole.
1 swings to 2 and 2 passes to 3 in the right corner. X5, the ball-side low defender, must come out to the corner, and 5 goes back to the left gap. The read is X5 leaving the block. Why the corner now: HoopTactics says the 1-2-2 is very susceptible to corner shots because the low defenders have to cover corner to corner, and a low defender who goes out leaves the block.
2 passes to 3 in the corner; X5 runs out on him, X4 slides across the lane toward the right block, the zone's adjustment, and X3 drops. Why X4 slides: with X5 out, the other low defender is the only one who can take the block.
The counter: 4 screens X4's slide at the lane and seals him outside. Why screen the slide: Coach's Clipboard's 3-2 counter is to screen the defender who slides and seal him outside, so the cutter arrives at an empty block.
The counter continues: 5 cuts from the left gap across the lane to the right block behind the sealed defender. Why the cut goes under: the sealed low man cannot turn, and the rover is at the free-throw line.
3 passes from the corner to 5 at the block, behind the sealed low defender. Why the pass is short and safe: X5 is out on the corner, X4 is sealed by 4, and the rover is at the free-throw line.
5 lays it in. Score. Why the 3-2 group starts here: the middle and the corners are the two holes, and this play uses each one to open the other.
