Drill: 1v1 Full-Court Containment
Outer third
only; cones
mark the lane
1
X1
1 starts at the baseline and dribbles up the sideline; X1 gives an arm's length of cushion, chest on the ball and inside foot up, because the job is to keep him in the outer third, not to steal it.
1 crosses over toward the middle; X1 chests and contests, beating him to the spot without turning his body, because an open hip is an invitation to the middle.
Turned back, 1 goes to the sideline again and X1 slides with him, counting the turn, because every direction change the defense forces is a point in this drill.
1 gets a step past X1; X1 does not shuffle beside him, he turns and sprints ahead of the ball and re-establishes in front, because running beside a dribbler is how you give up the layup.
Containment runs to the far baseline, not to half court: X1 walls off the middle one more time and 1 never gets into the middle third, which is the stop; the pair switch roles and come back in the other lane, so the other hand gets guarded.
