A two-guard front against the odd front: 1 and 2 split wide at the free throw line extended, because the chaser can only take one side; 4 waits at half court and 3 is wide ahead. 2 steps to the ball to receive.
5 inbounds to 2, who catches facing up court; the read is the chaser: X1 is on 2's side, so the first look is the swing, not the dribble, because the dribble is what the 1-3-1 wants.
Swing: 2 throws across to 1 before X1 can slide, because a pass beats a chaser's sprint every time, and now the whole press has to move; 5 steps in behind the ball as the trailer.
The trap comes anyway: X1 and X3 close on 1 at the sideline. 4 flashes to the middle behind X2's shoulder at the same time, because the middle defender has to choose between the flash and the sideline.
Adjustment: X2 jumps the flash. Counter: 2 runs the weak sideline the instant he sees it, because X4 can't guard the sideline and the middle at once and nobody is above the ball on that side.
Counter completed: 1 skips over the trap to 2 on the far sideline; X4 is late because X2 left him alone with two men, and the skip is thrown high and early, before the trap's hands come up.
2 speed-dribbles past half court before the wing can recover, which is why the swing matters: X4 is behind the ball now. 4 fills the middle of the frontcourt and 3 slides to the ball-side block so there are numbers ahead.
2 passes to 4 in the middle of the frontcourt, because the goalie has to stop the ball there and the block is open behind him.
4 drops it to 3 at the block, because X5 stepped up to the ball and nobody else is back.
3 finishes the layup; the chaser was beaten by the swing and the swing gave up the skip, which is why the 1-3-1 fears a two-guard front.
