Drill: Three-Minute Left-Hand Layups
left hand
only, all
the way
1
2
1 speed-dribbles up the left side with the left hand only, eyes up, while 2 and the line wait on the baseline. The left hand is the whole drill, so a right-hand touch at any point is a rep that does not count.
1 passes the half-court cone and angles toward the basket; 2 leaves the moment 1 clears the cone, because the floor has to hold two players at once for the count to reach seventy-five.
1 finishes the left-handed layup off the glass at game speed, because a layup that is slowed down to make it is not the layup the drill is training.
1 rebounds his own shot out of the net without a step of walking, and 2 keeps coming up the left side, so the ball is back in a left hand before the make has finished dropping.
1 comes back up the opposite side, still with the left hand, which is the hard rep because the left hand is now on the sideline side; 2 angles in for his layup. Anyone who misses goes back and makes it, otherwise the count is a lie.
2 finishes left-handed off the glass while 1 heads to lay it in at the far end and join the line. The coach counts makes for three minutes, because the number is the only honest measure of what fatigue did to the weak hand.
