Transition: 1 brings the ball up with the offense running wide and the defense scattered between half court and the lane. Why this is the most dangerous moment for a zone: the zone's advantage is its shape, and right now it has none.
Paint first. X5 sprints to the middle of the lane, X3 and X4 to a step outside the blocks, before anyone guards the ball. Why the rim before the ball: the zone concedes the early outside shot and takes away the early layup, because the layup is the shot the fast break was run for.
1 dribbles to the top while 2 and 3 fill the wings and 4 and 5 run to the corners. X1 and X2 sprint to the elbows and pick the ball up there. Why the guards wait until the elbows: a guard who picks up early leaves his elbow empty when the ball arrives, and that gap is the drive the zone cannot concede. The zone is built.
1 passes to 2 early, trying to beat the zone before it settles, and X4 sprints up on the flight. Why the forward is ready: he went to the block first, so he has the short sprint to the wing instead of a long one from half court.
X1 bumps X4 down, X2 to the nail, X5 to the ball-side block, X3 into the lane. Why the early pass got nothing: the paint was already full, so the wing catch is the same contested catch the zone forces in the half court.
2 passes to 4 in the corner and the zone contains it: X4 out with no baseline, X5 fronts, X3 to the rim, X1 sinks. Why the corner is still the zone's favorite spot in transition: the sideline and baseline do not move, and the long pass out is the only pass.
4 throws it back to 2 and the zone recovers to its wing picture on the flight. Why the zone concedes the return: it is away from the rim, and the fast break is over.
2 skips it across to 3 looking for the side the zone left late. X3 runs out, X2 sprints over, X5 crosses the lane. Why there is no late side: X3 went to his block first and never left it, so he is on the catch.
X2 bumps X3 down, X1 to the nail, X4 to the weak rim. The zone is set on the left. Why the possession that started as a fast break now looks like every other: the paint was filled first, and everything after that was the zone's ordinary rules.
3 is contained on the left wing with no drive middle, no block, and the clock the offense wanted to save already spent. Stop. Why the zone won a possession it was losing at half court: it conceded the early jump shot nobody took and never conceded the layup.
