One line behind the free throw line, two balls: 1 shoots his free throw with his real routine, not a heave, and 2 holds the second ball right behind him, because the shot that keeps you in the game is the same one you shoot in a game.
1 misses and sprints for the rebound while 2 steps to the line and shoots the second ball the instant 1's shot left his hands; no shooting early, because 2 scoring first is what knocks 1 out and the race has to be fair.
1 puts the rebound back in as fast as he can, correct hand on the layup, so he scores before 2's ball drops; the rule is no intentional misses for a quick put-back, otherwise the free throw stops being the point.
1 is safe and takes his ball out of the net; 2's free throw dropped too, so he goes to get his own, and 3 steps up as the next shooter with 4 and 5 moving up behind him, because the two balls leapfrog down the line all game.
1 outlets to 3 at the line, who has his hands up and ready for it, because a player who is not ready to catch holds up the whole line, and 2 will do the same with his ball to 4.
1 and 2 jog to the back of the line, 1 first since he scored first. If 2 had scored before 1 did, 1 would be out, which is why the shooter never watches his own shot: he is already moving on the miss.
3 shoots his free throw with 4 ready behind him, and the game runs until one player is left; the point is that every shot in it is a free throw with a consequence, so a quiet gym is never where kids learn to make them.
