The 2-1-2 against the 1-3-1: 1 and 2 in the slots on either side of X1 the chaser, 5 at the free-throw line in front of X5 the middle, 3 and 4 on the blocks under X2 and X3 the wings, X4 the warrior under the rim. Why two guards: a chaser can guard one point, and the slots are where he is not.
1 dribbles at X1 to draw him and the left wing X2 toward the ball. Why the dribble: the chaser's job is to force the ball to a side, and dribbling at him makes him commit to this one.
3 cuts from the left block out to the left corner. Why the cut comes from the block: a post who starts under the wing is behind the zone, and the warrior has to find him before he can guard him.
1 passes to 3 in the corner. X4 the warrior has to sprint from under the rim to the corner, and X2 drops. The read is the warrior: he commits to the corner. Why the corner pass: it is the one catch a 1-3-1 covers with its longest sprint.
5 dives from the free-throw line to the left block, the spot the warrior just left. X5 is late because he was fronting the free-throw line. Why the dive is timed to the warrior: a dive before he leaves runs into him, a dive after runs into air.
3 passes to 5 on the block and 5 scores. Score. Why the 1-3-1 gives this up: it has one baseline defender for two corners and two blocks, and the dive goes where he is not.
5 lays it in. Score. Why the next trip will be different: a coached 1-3-1 answers the dive by dropping the high middle, which is the adjustment the next frames show.
Next trip, the adjustment: 5 is back at the free-throw line and the zone resets, but this time X5 is cheating low, ready to drop onto the block the moment 5 dives. 1 and 2 in the slots, 3 and 4 on the blocks. Why the zone does this: it would rather give up the free-throw line than the layup.
2 swings the ball back to 1 in the left slot, and X5 stays low instead of fronting the free-throw line. Why the swing: it puts the ball on the side the first action came from, so the zone has to show whether it has changed.
3 cuts to the left corner again. Why the same cut: the counter only works if the zone is shown the action it adjusted to.
1 passes to 3 in the corner and the warrior sprints out. 5 dives, and X5 drops onto the block with him, the read for the counter. Why the read is clear: the middle has left the free-throw line, and the whole middle of the zone is empty.
The counter: 4 steps up from the right block and pins X3, the right wing, who is leaning to the ball. Why pin the wing: he is the only defender who can close out to the slot, and the chaser is on the wrong side.
3 skips the ball across to 2 in the right slot behind the pin. Why the skip is thrown now: the wing is pinned, the chaser is on the wrong side, and the middle is on the block; nobody is between the ball and 2.
2 catches with X3 behind the pin and X1 a step late, and shoots. Score. Why the counter works on this zone in particular: a 1-3-1 that drops its middle has nobody at the free-throw line, so the skip has no defender in its path.
