The sideline box, 3 inbounding, 2 the best shooter on the ball-side block. Why 2 starts low: the flare comes later, and a shooter who starts low is the last player the defense expects to end at the arc.
On the handoff, 4 steps up from the weak block and screens X1, the ball-side elbow's defender. Why the screen on X1: he is the one defender who could deny a cut to the top, and the zipper goes straight through where he stood.
1 zipper-cuts straight up the lane off 4's screen to the top of the key. X1 trails. Why the zipper: it is the fastest route from the lane to the top, and the catch there sees both wings.
3 inbounds to 1 at the top. Why the entry goes to the top and not the wing: the three is coming from a skip, and the skip is thrown from the top.
5 steps out and flare-screens X2 as 2 lifts from the block. Why the flare screen is set by the weak elbow: he is between 2 and the weak wing already, and the screen takes 2's defender away from the ball.
2 flares off 5's screen to the weak wing. The read is X2: he chases over the top of the flare, so 2 keeps his spot on the arc. Why flare and not curl: a flare takes the shooter away from the ball, where the help is not.
1 skips the ball over the top to 2 on the weak wing and 2 shoots the three. Score. Why the skip is on time: it is thrown as 2 clears the screen, before X2 can get around 5.
2 shoots. Score. Why Beilein ran this for a last shot: it is two screens and two passes, and the shot comes from the one spot the defense left to chase the ball.
Next trip, the adjustment: the defense has seen the flare and switches it, X5 jumping to 2 as he flares. Reset to the sideline box with 3 inbounding and 3 ready to step in as the next shooter. Why the switch: it is the only way to be on the shooter at the catch, and it leaves the switched post's man.
4 screens X1, 1 zipper-cuts to the top, and 3 inbounds to him; 3 steps in along the baseline toward the lane. The read for the counter: X5 is already leaning to switch the flare. Why 3 steps in low: Stevens' second option is for the inbounder, and it starts from the baseline.
3 inbounds to 1 at the top and steps in to the baseline. 2 flares and X5 switches onto him as expected. Why let the flare be switched: it pulls both X2 and X5 to the weak side, which empties the middle for the elevator.
The counter: 3 steps in to the baseline under the basket. Why the inbounder: his defender stood on the line to pressure the pass and is now the farthest defender from him.
5 and 4 set up shoulder to shoulder at the free-throw line with a gap between them, the elevator. Why the posts: they are the two players the switch left standing in the lane with nothing to do.
3 sprints up the middle through the gap, and 5 and 4 close the doors behind him; X3 runs into them. Why the doors close late: the cutter has to clear before the screen exists.
1 passes to 3 at the top of the key and 3 shoots the three with his defender behind the doors. Score. Why the inbounder is the shooter: the defense spent its switch on the flare and its best defender on the line.
3 shoots. Score. Why the two threes are one play: the flare is the first look, and the elevator is what the switch that stops the flare leaves open.
