Drill: 1v1 Closeout
Three lines of
four
1
2
3
X1
X2
X3
Three lines of defenders under the basket, a receiver for each line: X1 passes to 1 on the left wing, because the drill starts on his release and he has to be moving before the ball arrives.
X1 sprints the first two thirds of the distance as the ball leaves his hand, because a closeout that starts on the catch gives the shooter a rhythm shot every time.
The last third is short choppy steps, butt down and weight back, inside hand high and outside hand low, yelling ball; X1 stops under control, because a defender still sprinting at the catch is beaten by the first fake.
1 shot-fakes and takes his two dribbles baseline; X1 stays down on the fake and slides to contain, because leaving his feet is the only way the shooter gets by him.
1 passes to X2, the next defender up, and becomes the next defender in that line while X1 jogs to the back; the lines reset and the next closeout goes, because every player needs both the contest and the catch.
