The box with 0.6 seconds on the clock, 3 inbounding. Why the rule decides this play: with 0.3 or less only a tap can score, and with 0.4 to 0.7 a catch at the rim can, so the lob is the only pass worth throwing.
On the handoff, 2 cuts hard to the ball-side corner, 4 cuts to the weak block, and 1 pops to the weak wing, each taking his defender with him. Why all three leave: the lane has to be empty for the lob, and three cuts away from it empty it.
5 flashes from the ball-side block to the front of the rim with X5 behind him. The read is the clock and X5: 0.6 seconds allows a catch, and X5 is behind. Why 5 flashes late: a post who stands at the rim early is fronted; one who arrives with the ball is not.
3 throws the lob high to the rim and 5 goes up to catch it. Why high: a lob that can be tapped is one that can also be caught, and a flat lob is a steal.
5 catches above the rim and finishes before the horn. Score. Why this is the play for six tenths: a catch at the rim is the only shot that takes less time than the clock has.
Next trip, the adjustment, with 0.3 seconds: the defense fronts the post at the rim, X5 standing between 5 and the ball, and the rule now allows only a tap. Reset to the box, 3 inbounding. Why the front: it is the one way to take away a catch at the rim, and it puts the defender under the ball.
2, 4, and 1 clear the lane exactly as before and 5 flashes to the rim; this time X5 fronts him. The read for the counter: the front, and a clock that allows only a tap anyway. Why the flash still goes: the tap needs the post under the ball, fronted or not.
3 throws the lob high above the rim anyway. Why: the Line 2451 counter is that the post goes up over the front and taps the ball, and a tap does not need a catch.
The counter: 3 steps in from out of bounds to the block as the lob goes up, behind X3 who stood on the line. Why the inbounder steps in now: the ball is in the air, so he is a player, and nobody is between him and the rim.
5 goes up over the fronting X5 and taps the ball back to 3 on the block. Why the tap goes back and not at the rim: a fronted post cannot tap forward over a defender, and the inbounder is the one player nobody is guarding.
3 catches the tap and lays it in. Score. Why the inbounder scores: his defender stood on the line to pressure the pass and is behind him when he steps in.
