Drill: Closeout Shooting
shoot,
chase, pass,
close out
1
2
3
1 shoots from the right wing like a game shot, 2 waiting behind him and 3 spotted up on the left wing, because the drill only works if the first shot is a real one; a casual shot gives the chaser nothing to chase.
1 follows his shot to the rim for the rebound, make or miss, and 2 steps up to the wing spot he left, so the next shooter is already standing where the ball will come.
1 passes to 3 on the left wing, a strong pass to the pocket, because a soft pass gives the shooter a bad catch and gives the closeout time to arrive early.
1 sprints at 3 and closes out: two thirds of the way at a sprint, then chopping steps the last two strides, hand up, baseline foot back, so he contests the shot without flying by or fouling.
3 catches squared and shoots over the closeout; the coaching point is to read the closeout speed, because a defender who comes too fast is a shot fake and one dribble away from being beaten.
3 chases his own shot to the rim and 1 fills the left wing behind him, which is why three players is the right number: there is always a shooter waiting on each wing.
3 passes across to 2 on the right wing; younger players have the closeout leave on the pass, older players on the catch, so the contest is honest for the age group.
3 closes out on 2 with the same footwork, hand up and under control, because the drill is as much about the closeout as the shot and a lazy closeout teaches the shooter nothing.
2 shoots over the closeout and the pattern continues for three or four minutes before the spots move to the corners or the top, because every player should shoot and close out from every spot.
