Drill: Star Shooting
star: corner,
far wing, wing,
far corner, top
1
2
2 feeds 1 in the right corner, the first point of the star; 1 has his feet set before the catch, because the drill tests whether the feet still get set when the legs are tired, and the first rep sets the standard.
1 catches and shoots the three from the corner, a real three from behind the cone and not a step inside it, because every shot in the drill has to be the shot he will take in a game.
2 drops under the rim for the rebound while 1 holds his finish; the passer's rule is to feed only when the shooter is set, which is why he watches the shooter's feet and not the ball.
The ball comes off the rim to 2 and 1 sprints the long diagonal to the left wing, running hard and slowing into the last two steps, because the shooter who arrives at full speed shoots falling away.
2 passes to 1 on the left wing as the feet set, a pass to the pocket, so the shooter lifts straight into the shot without adjusting the ball.
1 shoots at the left wing, the second point of the star; the coaching point is balance on the catch, because the long run is where the fading shot comes from.
The ball comes down to 2 under the rim and 1 crosses the top to the right wing, the third point, so the pattern alternates sides and the shooter never gets a short run to rest on.
2 passes ahead to 1 at the right wing; from here the star finishes with the sprint to the left corner and the shot at the top, because the pattern has to trace the whole star to earn the name.
1 shoots at the right wing and keeps going, left corner then top, repeating the star until the round's shot count or clock runs out, so the shooter learns to make the fifth shot of the pattern as cleanly as the first.
