1 at the top against four-out with 5 on the left block. X5 plays behind 5, the perimeter is in the gap and on the help line. Why the screen is coming from 5: the post is the screener in almost every youth ball screen, and his defender is the one who calls it.
1 passes to 2 on the right wing. X2 closes out, X1 drops into the gap, X5 shades to help. Why the ball moves before the screen: a ball screen is run after the swing, so the defense has to be sound on the swing first.
2 throws it back to 1 at the top. X1 closes out, X2 drops to the gap. Why the defense concedes the pass back: it is going away from the rim, and the screen is still not set.
1 reverses to 3 on the left wing. X3 closes out, X1 to the gap, X5 shades to the high side of 5. Why X5 watches 5 and not the ball: the moment 5 leaves the block to screen, X5 has to know it first.
3 throws it back to 1 at the top. X1 closes out, X3 drops into the gap. Why the ball is back at the top: the ball screen is coming here, in the middle of the floor, where the dribbler can go either way.
5 comes up from the block and sets a ball screen on X1's right side. X5 yells it as 5 leaves the block: screen right, switch. Why the call comes early: X1 cannot see the screen, so the warning is the only thing between him and running into it blind; a late call is the same as no call.
1 dribbles off the screen to the right. On contact the defenders switch: X5 jumps out to 1 and stays in front of the ball, X1 stays attached to 5. Why on contact and not before: a switch before contact lets the dribbler reject the screen and drive the other way at a defender who has already left, which concedes the drive.
5 rolls to the rim. X1 stays attached and fronts the roll, between 5 and the ball, while X5 keeps 1 in front of him and X3 drops from the help line to the rim behind the roll. Why X1 fronts instead of trailing: a smaller defender behind a rolling big is a lob; in front of him with help at the rim, the roll is covered and the switch has cost nothing.
1 has no drive and no roll and kicks it to 2 on the wing. X2 closes out, X5 drops into the gap on 1, X1 holds the front on 5, X3 recovers. Why the pass out is what the switch concedes: the offense ran its play and the ball is back where it started, with two defenders on different men than before and nothing open.
2 passes to 4 in the corner while 1 relocates to the right slot. X4 closes out, X2 drops to the gap, X1 fronts 5 on the ball side. Why the mismatch does not matter yet: the offense would have to post 5 against X1 to use it, and a youth offense that just ran a ball screen is not thinking about that.
4 throws it back to 2 with the clock almost gone. X2 closes out, X4 drops to the gap, X5 stays in the gap on 1 and X1 on 5. Contained. Why the switch won the possession: the screen produced no open shot, no roll, and no drive, and the offense was forced into the pass the defense wanted.
