Drill: Beat the Pro
You 0, Pro 0:
play to 21
1
2
2 feeds 1 in the right corner, the first of the five cones; 1 has his feet set and hands ready before the catch, because the pro scores two on every miss and a rushed catch is where misses start.
1 catches, lifts, and shoots, no circling the ball, so the shot is the same one he will take in a game: catch and shoot in one motion.
The shot is good, one point for 1. 2 drops under the rim to take the ball out of the net, because the rebounder's job is to keep the game moving, not to admire the make.
The ball comes out of the net to 2 and 1 sprints to the right wing, the second cone, because the shooter relocates while the ball is being collected so he is squared and waiting when the pass comes.
2 passes to 1 on the wing, hitting the shooting pocket as the feet set, so the shooter never has to adjust the ball before he lifts it.
1 shoots from the wing; the coaching point after a make is the same as after a miss: same rhythm, same lift, because a shooter who speeds up when he is hot is about to hand the pro two points.
This one misses, so the pro scores two and leads. 2 chases the rebound; 1 stays calm, because rushing after a miss is the fastest way to miss two in a row.
2 comes up with the rebound and 1 relocates to the top, the third cone, running to the spot rather than toward the ball, so he arrives squared with his hands up.
2 passes to 1 at the top; from here the game continues left wing, left corner, then reverses, because the shooter has to beat the pro from every spot, not just his favorite.
1 shoots at the top; the drill runs until one side reaches twenty-one, then the shooter and rebounder swap, and the next round changes the shot to a one-dribble pull-up, so the score is a number the player can log and chase next workout.
