Base 2-3 against a 1-2-2 offense. Why the dribbler is the next test: the offense has learned that passing around the zone gets nothing, so the point guard will try to move the zone with the ball instead.
1 dribbles over from the top toward the right wing while 2 slides down to the deep wing to make room. X1 rides the ball, X2 slides to the nail. X4 stays down. Why X4 does not come up: the guard already has the ball, so a forward coming up concedes the short corner for nothing; the zone concedes the dribble and keeps its shape.
1 passes down to 2 on the deep wing. X1 follows the pass and takes it, X4 holds the short corner below, X5 to the ball-side block, X3 into the lane. Why this is not a bump: X4 never came up, so there is nobody to bump; the ordinary wing picture is reached in one slide instead of two.
2 passes to 4 in the corner and the zone contains it: X4 out, X5 fronts, X3 to the rim, X1 sinks, X2 on the high post. Why the corner again: every route around the zone ends in a corner, and the corner is where the zone has forced the offense into its fewest options.
4 throws it back to 2 and the zone recovers to its deep wing picture. Why the zone concedes the pass back out: it is away from the rim and the offense is restarting.
2 passes back up to 1 in the right slot. X1 comes back up with the ball, X2 holds the nail, X4 back up off the baseline. Why the zone looks like its base again with a tilt: the ball is at the top of the right side, and the guards shade to it without leaving the high post.
1 dribbles across the top to the left slot. X1 rides him to the middle and stops; X2 picks him up there and takes him the rest of the way. The hand-off. Why the guards exchange him: a guard who follows the dribbler all the way across leaves his elbow, and the gap he leaves is the one drive the zone will not concede.
1 passes to 3 on the left wing and X3 sprints up on the flight. Why X3 comes up here but X4 did not on the dribble over: this time the ball arrived by pass, with no guard yet on the wing, so the forward is the closest defender to the catch.
X2 bumps X3 down, X1 drops to the nail, X5 slides left, X4 into the lane. Why the zone is set on the left: the dribble across the top cost the offense clock and moved the ball no closer to the rim.
3 skips it back across to 2. X4 runs out, X1 sprints over, X5 crosses the lane. Why the skip still gets nothing: the forward is on the catch on the flight, as always.
X1 bumps X4 down and the zone is set on the right wing with the clock gone. Contained. Why the dribble did not beat the zone: the forwards stayed home when a guard had the ball, and the guards never left their elbows to chase, so the zone's shape never broke.
