Drill: Arc Finishing
five cones
outside the arc
1
1 starts under the rim and dribbles right-handed out to the corner cone, around the outside of it, at full speed, because the cone stands in for a defender and the drill is only honest at game pace.
Turn the corner and attack the rim, extending the ball out in front out of the cone to accelerate, chin and eyes up, so the first dribble after the cone is the fastest one.
Right-hand layup off the glass, driving the knee to the nose for height and control, because a finisher who floats flat gets his shot blocked by the first long defender he meets.
1 rebounds and dribbles straight out to the wing cone, around the outside of it; the point is no rest between cones, which is why the round is timed.
Attack from the wing angle, still right-handed, so the finish comes from a spot the layup line never gives him and the footwork has to adjust on the way.
Finish high off the glass; the eyes stay on the target, not the cone behind him, because dropping the eyes on the gather is how finishers miss a layup they have made a thousand times.
Out to the top cone next, around the outside and straight back downhill, so the third angle is the middle of the floor where the help is usually waiting.
Attack from the top at full speed, long last steps; a player who slows down to find the rim has told the defense exactly when to jump, which is why the gather happens at pace.
Layup, then the left wing cone and the left corner cone the same way, then all five back with the left hand; ten layups a round, timed, because the clock is what keeps the pace honest.
