Delay: 5 at the top of the key, 1 and 4 in the slots straddling the arc, 2 and 3 in the corners, 1 with the ball. Why the big is the hub: every action in Delay runs through a handoff, and the big is the player the defense sags off.
1 passes to 5 at the top and immediately chases the pass for the handoff, the get. X5 sags off 5 and X1 trails the chase. Why chase right away: Hooper University's rule is that the passer sprints to receive the handoff from the same player, because the chase is the cut the defense has not reacted to.
1 sprints toward 5 and 5 dribbles at him. The read is X1: trailing. Why the read: a trailing defender meets the handoff as a screen, and a screen on a trailing defender is a drive.
5 hands off to 1 at the left slot. Why the handoff and not a pass: the big's body is the screen for one count, and the chaser already has momentum.
1 attacks downhill off the handoff with X1 behind him and 5 rolls; X5 steps up to stop the ball. Why the roll: the big who handed off is now behind the defender who stepped up.
1 throws the pocket pass to 5 rolling and 5 scores. Score. Why the get produces a layup: the sag that the big's catch invited is the room the handoff drive uses.
5 lays it in. Score. Why the next trip is different: a defense that has seen the get goes under the handoff, which is the flip's trigger.
Next trip, the adjustment: X1 goes under the handoff, ducking below 5 to meet 1 on the other side. Reset to Delay with 1 at the slot and 5 at the top. Why going under: it takes away the drive by giving up the shot, and it puts the defender on the wrong side of the big.
4 swings the ball to 1 and 1 passes to 5 and chases for the get again. The read for the flip: X1 is going under the handoff. Why the flip is a read and not a call: the big sees the defender's path before the handoff and turns the other way.
1 passes to 5 and chases; 5 dribbles at him and X1 ducks under 5 toward the far side of the handoff. Why the defense shows it: a defender going under has to commit before the handoff to be there.
5 hands off to 1 with X1 under the handoff on the rim side. Why the handoff still happens: the flip is a re-screen, and a re-screen needs the first screen to have been used.
The flip, the counter: 5 turns after the handoff and re-screens X1 the opposite way, with his back to where X1 ducked under. Why the re-screen works: Hooper University's twist forces the defender who went under to now go over, and he is already a step behind.
1 reverses off the flip toward the middle, 5 rolls, 4 lifts, and X1 is caught on the screen; X5 steps up. Why the middle: the defender went under to the sideline side, so the middle is the side he is not on.
1 pulls up at the elbow over the step-up, the counter's shot. Score. Why Delay never runs out of answers: a trailing defender gives the drive, a defender under gives the flip, and a top-lock gives the backdoor.
