Base 2-3 against a 1-2-2 zone offense: 1 at the top, wings on both sides, both corners filled. Why this offense is what youth teams see most: it stretches the zone to the corners and swings the ball to find the slow slide.
1 passes to 2. X4 sprints up on the flight with his hands high. Why on the flight and not the catch: the ball travels faster than any defender, so the only way to be there is to leave when it leaves; a forward who waits for the catch concedes an open three.
The bump: X1 takes 2, X4 drops to the short corner, X2 to the nail, X5 to the ball-side block, X3 into the lane. Why the zone is happy here: 2 cannot drive middle, cannot enter the block, and has X4 in his corner lane, so the zone has forced the pass it wants, to the corner.
2 passes to 4 in the corner. X4 steps out with high hands and no baseline, X5 fronts the block immediately, X3 slides to the rim, X1 sinks inside the arc, X2 drops onto the high post. Why the corner is the zone's favorite spot: the drive is sealed, the block is fronted, and every pass out is a long one.
4 has nothing and throws it back to 2. On the flight X1 recovers to the wing, X4 drops back to the short corner, X5 slides off the front. Why the zone concedes the return pass: it is a long pass away from the basket, and the zone gets back to a picture it already knows.
2 reverses to 1 at the top and the zone recovers to its base on the flight, X5 back to the middle. Why X5 must move on this pass too: if he stays on the right block, the left block is open before the ball even gets to the left wing.
1 swings to 3 and X3 sprints up on the flight, the mirror of the first pass. Why the offense swings all the way: it is looking for the side that is a half-step slow; the zone's advantage is that both forwards are drilled the same.
X2 bumps X3 down to the short corner, X1 drops to the nail, X5 slides to the left block, X4 into the lane. Why the left side is identical: a zone has one set of slides, and the swing just runs them the other way.
3 passes to 5 in the left corner: X3 out with no baseline, X5 fronts the block, X4 to the rim, the guards sink. Six passes in, and the zone has forced the ball into its best spot on the floor. Why the corner again: the zone did not chase the ball, it kept pushing it to the edge of the floor.
5 is contained in the corner: no baseline, no entry, X4 at the rim, and the only pass a long one back out as the clock runs down. Stop. Why this is the zone's win even without a steal: the offense has spent the possession passing around the outside and never got a look it wanted.
