1 at the top against five-out. X1 on the ball, X2 and X3 denying the wings up the line, the corners on the help line. Why the deny invites the backdoor: the defender is on the high side of his man, so the low side, toward the basket, looks open.
1 passes to 2 on the right wing. X2 closes out, X1 jumps to the ball, and X4 steps up the line to deny 4 in the corner, head turned to see ball and man. Why X4's head position is the play: a denying defender who sees only the ball is beaten by the cut he never saw.
4 plants and cuts backdoor from the corner to the rim. X4 sees it, opens to the ball, drops a step, and slides with him, hand in the lane the whole way, staying between the cutter and the ball. Why open to the ball instead of turning and chasing: a defender who turns his back to the ball cannot see the pass, and the pass is what he is denying.
Denied, 4 clears back out to the corner with X4 riding him up the line. Why the defense concedes the clear-out: the cutter is going away from the rim, and the ball still has nowhere to go.
2 throws it back to 1 at the top. X1 closes out, X2 jumps to the ball into a deny, X3 steps up to deny 3. Why the reversal is next: the offense could not get the ball inside on the right, so it tries the left.
1 passes to 3 on the left wing. X3 closes out, X1 jumps to the ball, X5 steps up the line to deny 5 in the left corner, head turned. Why the corner defender is in deny and not help: 5 is one pass away now, and the deny is the rule one pass away.
5 plants and backdoors from the left corner. X5 opens to the ball, drops, and slides with him, hand in the lane, between the cutter and the ball. Why the answer is the same on both sides: the backdoor is the only counter to the deny, so the defense drills the counter to the counter until it is automatic.
Denied again, 5 clears back to the corner with X5 riding him. Two backdoors, two denials, and the ball has not been below the free-throw line. Why the offense is out of answers: the deny took the wing, the swivel took the backdoor, and nothing else in a youth offense gets the ball inside.
3 throws it back to 1 at the top. X1 closes out, X3 jumps to the ball into a deny. Why the pass back out is the one the defense concedes every time: it is the only pass left, and it goes away from the rim.
1 passes to 2 on the right wing with the clock gone. X2 closes out, X1 jumps to the ball, X4 denies the corner with his head turned. Denied, contained. Why the possession ended on the perimeter: every catch was forced out and late, and both cuts behind the deny ran into a defender who saw them coming.
