1 passes to 2 on the left wing, because the screen away starts the same way the cut does, with a pass, and the defense can't know which one is coming.
Instead of cutting, 1 screens away for 3 on the right wing, set two feet off X3 with his back to where he wants 3 to go, because the screener screens the defender, not the teammate.
3 walks X3 into the screen and reads him: the scouted defense shoots the gap, X3 sliding to the ball side of the screen to meet 3 at the top, which is the read for the fade, because a defender who cheats over the top can't get back behind the screen.
Counter: 3 fades behind the screen to the right wing, 1 pops to the top the opposite way, and 2 dribbles toward the middle to shorten the pass, because the fade is only as good as the angle the passer gives it.
Counter continued: 2 skips it to 3 on the fade, because X3 is on the wrong side of the screen and the pass arrives before he can get around it.
2 basket cuts off his pass and 4 lifts to the left wing behind him, because the passer always moves; X3 arrives late and 3 shot fakes him into the air.
3 drives past the flying closeout to the elbow, because a defender in the air is beaten by one dribble, and 2 clears to the left corner so the lane stays empty.
3 pulls up from the elbow with nobody in the paint; the screen away gave the shooter a second option when the first was taken away, which is why the cutter reads before he runs.
