Drill: 1-on-1 Box Out vs a Shot

X1
1 has the ball on the left wing with 2 next in the shooting line behind him; X1 steps out from the free-throw line and closes out, hand up and hips down, because a closeout that flies by gives up the drive instead of the shot.
1 shoots over the contest. X1 lets it go rather than leaving his feet, so he is still balanced and on the floor when the ball leaves the hand.
The moment the ball is up X1 turns and checks 1 with a forearm, then arcs him away from the rim, because on the perimeter the shooter is already outside; the defender's job is to keep him there, not to box him under the basket.
1 fights for his own miss and X1 rides him wide with his legs, staying between the man and the ball without a hand on the jersey, because a grab is a foul and a gap is a second shot.
The ball comes off the far side of the rim and X1 releases to go get it, because a box-out that holds forever and never pursues the ball is only half a rebound.
X1 secures the rebound with two hands at the top of his jump and chins it, so the shooter crashing behind him has nothing to grab.
X1 pivots to the outside and throws a clean outlet to 2, the next shooter, because the rebound is not finished until the first pass is. Shooter goes to the defender line, defender to the shooting line: reset.
