4 and 5 have moved up to the top of the key, a step outside the elbows, with 1 above them and 2 and 3 on the wings. Why the posts come up: the 2-3 does not send a defender up with them, so there is nobody to switch the screen they are about to set.
1 passes to 5 at the top. X2 turns to the ball and steps up to him; X1 stays with 1. 2 slides inside toward the block to clear the right wing and keep X4 low. Why 2 clears: the flare needs an empty wing, and a wing player standing there would bring X4 up with him.
4 steps across and back-screens X1, the guard who has turned to watch the ball. Why screen X1 and not X2: X2 is on the ball, and X1 is the only defender who can get to the wing 1 is about to flare to.

2 arrives and back-screens X4, the right forward, with 5 waiting on the right block below. Why the screen is set before the drive: the forward has to be sealed before the middle is pulled up, or he takes the lob.
1 dribbles down the open middle between the screened guards and X5 steps up to stop the ball, which is the read. Why the drive is the trigger: the middle has to come up or give up the layup, and when he comes up the rim is empty.
5 cuts under 2's back screen to the rim with X4 sealed behind him. Why the cut waits for the drive: the middle has to be up with the ball before the rim is empty.
1 throws the lob over X5 to 5 at the rim, the counter's payoff. Why the lob and not the bounce pass: X5 is between the ball and 5, and the pass has to go over him.
5 catches and finishes at the rim. Score. Why the two plays are taught together: the flare beats a zone that does not switch, and the X-screen lob beats the one that does.
